Frederick George Swaish

1879 - 1931

Frederick George Swaish was born in Bristol, the son of Sir John Swaish, a pawnbroker who twice served as Lord Mayor of Bristol. Swaish's dashing 1915 portrait of his father, wearing his mayoral robes, is in the collection of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery.

He studied in Bristol and London where in 1903 he was sharing a fashionable Glebe Place, Chelsea studio with Ernest Howard Shepherd. He worked as a painter of portraits, figurative and landscape subjects. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal West of England Academy and elsewhere. Works by him are held in the collections of the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Bristol Museum and Art Gallery; the Royal West of England Academy.
