Provenance: A gift from the artist to Dr & Mrs W Murray.

Born in Rochdale, Stott studied in Paris under Carolus-Duran and Cabanel and came under the influence of Bastien-Lepage and Millet. Returning to England he first lived in Evesham, Worcestershire but had settled in Amberley, Sussex by 1889. Similar to Clausen and La Thangue he following the example of Millet he painted plein air scenes of everyday country life.
