Portrait of a Child
JOHN COLLINGHAM MOORE (1829-1880)
Portrait of a Child
Signed and dated 1859 Watercolour
50 by 31 cm., 19 by 12 in. (frame size 62 by 43 cm., 24 by 17 in.)
John Collingham Moore was one of a large family born to the artist, William Moore of York. Amidst his many siblings were the artists Edwin Moore, William Moore II, Henry Moore and Albert Joseph Moore. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools from 1850 and gained a reputation as a sensitive portrait painter, especially of children. Samuel Redgrave praised his work and described them as: “very true to nature, quiet and delicate in tone, and pure in colour, having an original character of their own.” (A Century of British Painters, Phaidon 1947, p.364)
