Kathleen Hale’s talents as an artist were first recognised by her headmistress at Manchester High School for Girls. She was encouraged to attend art courses in Manchester before going on to study at University College, Reading under the illustrator and print maker Allen W Seaby. She moved to London in 1917 where, for a time, she worked as secretary to Augustus John, thereby coming into contact with a wide artistic circle. During the 1920s she was able to earn a living working at an illustrator, most for children’s books. It was not until after her marriage in the 1930s that she created the series of children’s book for which she is best remember: Orlando the Marmalade Cat.
