John Everett Millais, one of the founder members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as also a keen sportsman. In 1851 he met John Leech who was then the chief cartoonist for Punch and had been the original illustrator for the sporting novels of Surtees. They became close friends, sharing an passionate interest in country sports. It was Leech who introduced Millais to fox hunting and the two would leave London every Saturday to hunt in the shires. Known as a bold and courageous riders across country, they would fearlessly tackle hedges and ditches. Millais continued to hunt until later years when he would spend more time in Scotland.
