Henry Moore was the elder brother of Albert Joseph Moore and studied under his father William Moore at the York School of Design and at the Royal Academy schools.  His early landscapes and rural scenes show Pre-Raphaelite influence but from about 1857 he turned almost exclusively to marine subjects and was considered to be one of the foremost marine artists of his day.  His work was exhibited extensively and examples are held in many public collections.
