George Herbert Rose was born in Chipping Ongar, Essex, the son of a tailor. In 1911 he started work as a commercial clerk and became a part-time art student at the Regent Street Polytechnic. After a time in London he settled in Suffolk becoming an active member of the Ipswich Art club where he was a regular exhibitor. A landscape painter in both oils and watercolours he also exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club and Royal Scottish Academy.
