Wirgman was a notable painter of portraits and genre and historical subjects. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy and elsewhere and was a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. This portrait of Dicksee was published in the Graphic magazine in 1881 on the occasion of Dicksees election as a member of the Royal Academy.
