Sir Joseph Noel Paton

1821 - 1901

One of Scotland’s leading Victorian artists, Paton is probably now best known for his great fairy subjects: The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania (1849, Scottish National Gallery) and the Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania (1947, Scottish National Gallery). However, he was also a successful illustrator, sculptor, poet, antiquary and expert in Celtic legends and folklore. He became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1850 and 1866 he was appointed Queen’s Limner for Scotland.
