Rudolf Helmut Sauter

1895 - 1977

Sauter was a painter, printmaker, illustrator and poet. The son of the artist Georg Sauter he was educated at Harrow School and studied art in London and Munich. During the First World War he and his father were interned and his letters and drawing from this period are held in the Imperial War Museum. With strong literary interests, being a member of the writers' club Pen; he illustrated a definitive edition of works by his uncle John Galsworthy. Sauter exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, Pastel Society, in the provinces, at the Paris Salon and widely in the United States. He held one-man shows in London and New York. Many of his paintings were destroyed by a fire in the 1980s. Works by him are in the Imperial War Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Ferens Art Gallery, Hull and in other public collections.
