John Newberry
1934
Newberry was born in Horsham, Sussex and educated at Bath. After national service he studied Architecture at Cambridge and Fine Art at Newcastle, graduating in 1960. He moved to Oxford where he taught at the Ruskin School of Drawing for twenty-nine years, for the last two of which he was Acting Head. He usually paints watercolours of landscapes and buildings. Working en plein air, he usually completes his work watercolour in one sitting, using white paper to give the works a natural brilliance and to capture the light and sky. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1989 and a fully member in 1995. He also shows regularly at the Royal Academy, New English Art and Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
