David Murray
1849 - 1933
United Kingdom Born in Glasgow, Murray spent 11 years in business while studying at the Glasgow School of Art in the evening. He became an associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1881 and in the in following year moved to London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1875 and was a regular exhibitor at many other venues. His landscapes are realistic and painted in a broad and vigorous style. Up until 1886 he painted in Scotland, but after that he found his subjects mostly in the south of England and the Continent. In the Country of Constable, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1903, was purchased by the Chantrey Bequest and is now in the Tate Gallery. His works are now in many public collections.
