Gerald Edward Roberts Smith was born in Melbury-Sampford, Dorset and educated at Chester Arts School. He trained under Edward Frampton befor joining A K Nicholson’s studio in 1906. He succeeded Nicholson on his death in 1937. Smith was an early member of the British Society of Master Glass Painters and its Chairman from 1958-59.
