Leslie Roy Hobdell was born in South London in 1911. After studying at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts he started a collaboration with the photographer and set designer Angus McBean, creating numerous backdrops for ballets and plays in London. As an artist he is best remembered for his surrealist paintings and convincing tromp l’oeil murals. Many of his works are playfully signed with the initials of his two cats, Giles and Emma Farquharson. His theatrical portrait of Angus McBean is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
