Osborne was born in Ninfield, East Sussex, the son of a farmer. Throughout his early life he spent much of his time in the surrounding country side of his parents’ farm, watching and sketching wildlife and the rolling Sussex Downs. He studied at Hastings School of Art, winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. At the RCA he was awarded the Prix de Rome Scholarship in Engraving which took him to Italy to further his studies. He returned to England in 1932 and took a position teaching at the Polytechnic School of Art in Regent Street.

A Gathering Storm is his first Royal Academy exhibit. It recalls his time spent on the family farm in East Sussex but all expresses the worries and tensions of a country approaching war.

Osborne was to concentrate the majority of his work as a print maker, becoming a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and the Society of Wildlife Artists.
