Buhler was born in London to Swiss parents. He studied commercial art in Zurich and Basel before returning to London and enrolling at St Martin’s School of Art in 1934. The following year he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, but stayed there for only six weeks. He was friendly with many members of the Euston Road School who would visit his mother’s bookshop and café on Charlotte Street. Although not a member of the group he was clearly influence by this with his restrained tones and urban subject matter. In addition to his landscapes he was much admired as a portrait painter, both of commissioned works and of his friends, including Steven Spender, Ruskin Spear, Barnett Freedman, John Minton and Francis Bacon. The present portrait of Robert Kitchener can be dated to the mid 1930s. Another portrait of Robert Kitchener by Robert Buhler is in the collection of Southampton Art Gallery. Anthony Devas also painted a portrait of Robert Kitchener, exhibited at the Cooling Galleries in 1936. Devas, along with Buhler, was also closely associated with member of the Euston Road School.
