Tadeusz Styka was born in Poland, the son of the military and battle artist Jan Styka. He studied with his father and in Paris where won several prizes and was awarded the French Legion of Honour. In 1929 he emigrated to the United States, setting up in an impressive studio in New York. He was a successful figure, animal and history painter but is probably best known as a society portraitist, painting many of the personalities of the early 20th century including Maurice Maeterlink, Caruso, Theodore Roosevelt and Ignacy Paderewski, President of Poland. He died in New York in 1954.
