Frederick Henry Stonham was born in Reading, Berkshire and studied at Oxford School of Art 1948-1952, before going on to Bournemouth College of Art, 1952-1953. A painter, printmaker, woodcarver and teacher, he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1953 and was also a regular exhibitor at the New English Art Club and elsewhere. For some years he taught art in prisons, including Parkhurst on the Isle of Wight. The present work dates from his period in Oxford, where he lived in a house on the Botley Road until the mid 1950s. His studio sale was held in Christies in 2006.
