SIR NOEL COWARD (1899-1973)
Cow Parsley
Signed and dated l.r.: Noel ”˜66 Oil on canvas
51 by 41 cm., 20 by 16 in. (frame size 67 by 57 cm., 26 by 22 in.)
Provenance: Christie’s South Kensington, 3 July 2003, lot 475.
The playwright, director, actor and singer Noel Coward was also an accomplished artist. Painting was an essential part of his life and his great pleasure at times of relaxation. Initially he worked in watercolour but Churchill encouraged him to use oils, resulting in atmospheric, energetic and often colourful Impressionist paintings. Much of his work remained in his own collection until his death.
