Teazel on the Saltings
Elizabeth Sorrell (nee Tanner) was born in the mining village of New Skelton-in-Cleveland, Yorkshire. When she was eight her family moved to Eastbourne where she studied at Eastbourne School of Art before going on to the Royal College of Art (1938-41). She was awarded traveling scholarships to Paris and Italy and won the Federation of British Industry Award First Prize in 1940 and the Royal College of Art gold medal for work of special distinction in 1941. After the art school she initially worked as a designer of wallpapers and fabrics for Arthur Sanders & Son Ltd, before concentrating on her watercolour painting. She was elected a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1958. In addition to the RWS she also exhibited at the New English Art Club and Royal Academy. She is represented in the collection of the Tate Gallery, Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne and in many other UK public collections. In 1947 she married the artist Alan Sorrell and they lived at Thundersley, southeast Essex.
