Samuel Henry William Llewellyn was born in Cirencester and studied at the National Art Training School under Sir Edward John Poynter and in Paris at the atelier of Jules Lefebvre. He served as President of the Royal Academy from 1928 -1938 and was Trustee of the National Gallery 1933-1940.

Probably best known as a society portrait painter, Llewellyn’s early exhibited works show his interest in landscape and plein air painting, spending a time working in Newlyn and St Ives. A prolific exhibitor, he showed at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artist, Grosvenor Gallery and New English Art Club. Works by him are in the collections of many UK public collections.
