Caldwell was born in Canterbury, the son of Samuel Caldwell, the master stained-glass artist for Canterbury Cathedral. Edmund initially apprenticed to become a stone mason before studying painting in the Canterbury studio of Thomas Sidney Cooper. He then spent time in Paris studying at the Academie Julian with Lefevbre. On his return from France he set up his studio in London where he specialised in oil paintings and watercolours of animals, particularly dogs. He exhibiting at the Royal Academy, Royal Watercolour Society and Royal Institute of British Artists. He also worked as an illustrator and print maker and turned to sculpture in later life.
