Hans Hansen

United Kingdom Although of Danish extraction, Hansen was born in Leith and studied in Edinburgh under R B Nisbet and J Ross. He developed a style very close to that of his Scottish contemporary, Arthur Melville (1855-1904), using a technique of painting onto wet paper and carefully allowing certain areas of colour to run together with details being added as the paper dried. A landscape and figure painter he worked extensively abroad; in the Middle East, North Africa and Spain painting Eastern markets, harems and bullfighting scenes. The present work showing a London view is rare in his oeuvre. He won a silver medal at Salzburg International Exhibition and exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and at numerous other venues and was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society in 1906. In 1911 Hansen moved to London and he died in Southend on Sea in 1947. He is represented in the collection of Glasgow Art Gallery.
