Gifted by Richard Garbe to his brother Gilbert Garbe and thence by descent.
Garbe was born in Dalston, London, the son of Gustave Garbe, a manufacturer of ivory and tortoiseshell fancy goods to whom he was apprenticed. He later studied at the Central School of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1908. He taught sculpture at the Central School 1901-29 and was Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art, 1929-46.
